Labeling, Coding + Pricing Your Products

11min

Makers requires all products, in retail stores, to be labeled with a specific coding system. The most important element to your product labels is the SKU. Your SKU on your product label is used by the retail store cashiers to find your products at the cash register. The easier it is for them to find your products, the faster and more accurate the transaction!

All product labels should include a unique SKU, and this SKU should match one of your inventory listings in Marketplace.

SKUs can be the same for the same product for multiple variants as long as the price is the SAME! So "Tee-shirt Small" and "Tee-shirt Large" can both be AT123-TEE.

Security Towers are also featured at ALL Makers stores, for more info head to Security Towers and Tags

General Label Guidelines:

  1. All products entering the store MUST be tagged using the correct label format.
  2. Product labels must NEVER be handwritten
  3. Products must be labeled BEFORE entering stores. Labeling is NOT permitted anywhere in the stores, including the backrooms.
  4. Products with incorrect labels will NOT be sold.

How to Create Your Product SKUs:

Your SKU code is made up of a Vendor Code & a Product Code.

Please leave the barcode field empty. For more information on how to add product listings to Marketplace, please See Step 3: Set up MVPOS

Pricing Your Products

Selling Price - (eg. $20 or $20.00 - not $25.23 nor $24.99) Your product price must be included on each product label that you choose to display/sell in your display. Prices are to be whole numbers only. You can only include taxes in your pricing if you are a registered business (i.e. you have a HST number). If you are a registered business:

  1. Prices are to be whole numbers
  2. Prices must INCLUDE all taxes.
  3. Products/signage should not advertise that tax is included (the store charges a 13% service fee – see section below – that could mislead the customer thinking the product is a flat price).

Makers adds a 13% service fee to all sales - this is paid by the customer and does not come out of your payouts - read more here: Service Fees

Regulated Label Information

All products MUST include regulated labelling information BY LAW in Canada i.e INGREDIENTS, BEST BEFORE DATES, MATERIALS WITH POTENTIAL TO CAUSE ALLERGY etc. Applicable product categories include, but are not limited to, FOOD, COSMETICS, TABLEWARE, JEWELLERY, TEXTILES, CLOTHING. Please do your due diligence and know your legal responsibilities as a small business owner.

Product Protection and Safety

It is strongly recommended for those who sell food and bath and body products to seal all products for sale that are not testers. This is to avoid having customers open, test, damage or use new products that are not meant to be opened.

If you do choose to have testers, please mark it clearly on product so customers know it can be used.

How to Run an In-Store Sale or Promotion

Makers are welcome to run promotions within your display. All promotions must meet the following criteria.

  1. Vendors must communicate the promotion to customers within your space with clear and secure signage. Handwritten signs are not permitted. Vendors are responsible for placing the signage within their assigned space.
  2. Notification of the promotion must be communicated to the appropriate store manager via email.
  3. All items must be individually labelled with the promotion guidelines ex: 10% off, buy 2 save $20, etc so that staff know how to discount your items when they arrive at the till without having to refer back to your shelf.
